Propane Safety Answers and Green Facts
We recommend familiarizing yourself with basic propane safety. The Propane Education & Research Council has created some great informative videos and flyers for quick lessons and refreshers!
Do you have a propane gas leak?
- Propane has a strong, unpleasant odor similar to rotten eggs or a skunk’s spray.
- This odorant is added intentionally to help identify propane leaks.
If you think you smell propane:
Remove any ignition sources from the area.
- Put out any open flames or smoking material.
- Distance any appliances or sources that could create a spark.
Vacate the area.
- Remove everyone from the building or area where you suspect a leak.
Shut off the flow of gas.
- If you are able, shut off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank.
- Turn the valve clockwise to close it.
Report the leak.
- From a safe location, call Provanta to report the leak at 814-676-8300.
- Call 911 or your local fire department.
Keep the area clear.
- Do not return to the area until your propane service technician or emergency responder says it is safe to do so.
Have your system checked.
- Before using your system, be sure your propane service technician does a complete inspection and ensures it is safe to resume use.

Did you know that propane is clean-burning and can help you live more sustainably by minimizing your carbon footprint?
Pennsylvania consumes about 380 million gallons of propane per year. 100% of Provanta’s propane is sourced locally from Ohio & Pennsylvania!
Next to solar and wind, propane is one of the cleanest renewable fuels approved under the Clean Air Act.
Electricity loses nearly 68 percent of its energy in generation, transmission, and distribution compared to about 12 percent energy loss for propane.
Renewable propane groups in the United States and Europe have developed ways to produce propane from renewable sources such as biomass, animal fat, and vegetable oil. The propane produced in this process has all the benefits of traditional propane. It’s clean, affordable, and reliable. It also has an ultra-low carbon footprint compared to electricity.
